Here is a little background story about my craft. About 8 years ago I had a student give me (and my teacher partner) a cool personalized clipboard made from the back of a pair of jeans and a fleece scarf that was all the rage at that time. I loved my clipboard! I thought the jean pocket was super handy for holding things and it had my name and our school. I have changed schools twice since that time and I ironed some books over my old school name and used initials for my school (which had to be picked off and replaced when joining my current school). I also added a couple of embellishments.
I kept thinking it would be fun to make a replacement and I even saved some jeans for years. During a somewhat recent closet cleaning I ditched all but one of the old jeans. With all this crafting lately (and seeing everyone's fun clipboard designs) I thought it might finally be time to make a new clipboard. Of course I decided it needed to be even snazzier than my old one - taking into account some recent clipboard posts.
Here is what I did:
First, I gathered all my materials -
clipboard (I got mine for under $2 at Walmart)
spray adhesive
old pair of jeans (only half a butt needed)
scrapbook paper
wide single fold bias tape
some type of glue to attach the trim
Mod Podge
embellishments - I got mine from Michael's (flowers and ribbon) and Hobby Lobby (fabric glitter kit & glitter)
Then I cut the back off my old jeans and used spray adhesive to glue it on to the back of the clipboard. I trimmed off the excess. At this point I realized that it was a little slanted and way closer to the top pf the clipboard than my previous one. I got a bit frustrated (because I can be a perfectionist) and decided to look for a pair of jeans with a lower pocket at Goodwill the next day. Well, apparently lower pockets aren't the style now. I ended up buying a pair a bit lower and started over. I ended up deciding that I thought it would be fun to give away my first one so I actually finished two clipboards.
Next I cut two different pieces of scrapbook paper to the correct size for the boards. I used spray adhesive to attach them to the fronts. (On the second clipboard I did the paper before the jeans which is why the pictures are reversed below). Of course I gave it a little time to dry. I also attached the bias tape trim with fabric glue on one side and some heavy duty glue on the other side that I had from jewelry making. I would probably use hot glue for the scrapbook paper side next time.
After the trim dried I put some Mod Podge on the paper side and I ironed some flower embellishments to the jeans side.
The final step was to put some ribbon on like Puttin on My Big Girl Pants last week. This is one of the finished clipboards! Isn't it super cute. This is the decorated clipboard I will give away to one lucky follower. If you are selected you can either have it as is and you can write on it with sharpie like that parent did or get your own iron on letters. I would also be willing to personalize it for you - keep reading to find out more.
Well, for my clipboard I wanted it to be personalized with some pizazz. I had purchased a small fabric glitter kit and some glitter so I wanted to try it out. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut my name out of some vinyl to create a stencil. I used the sponge and glue to fill in the stencil and then covered it with purple glitter. Unfortunately, I had to wait two hours - gosh two hours is a long time when you want to see if something worked or not.
When I peeled it off it looked fabulous! I love the purple glitter. I also added a few ribbons and a butterfly that I found at Michael's. So what do you think?
For the giveaway clipboard, I have a couple of personalization options. I can either create your name in purple fabric paint (no bling) that matches the big flower very well. Another option is that I could your name in silver or purple glitter (because that's what I have). The third option is that I have navy heat transfer vinyl (flocked) that I could cut and iron on directly.
